The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) and its journal Anesthesiology announce the 16th annual “Journal Symposium,” to be held at the Annual Meeting of the ASA in October 2007, in San Francisco, California. The Journal Symposium highlights emerging and important concepts in anesthesia research and clinical practice.

For 2007, the Journal Symposium is entitled “Diabetes, Obesity, and the Metabolic Syndrome.”

The Symposium will take place Tuesday, October 16, 2007, in San Francisco, California (exact time and location to be announced later).

The Symposium format will be a poster-discussion session in conjunction with formal lectures by four invited international experts. Abstracts for inclusion in the Journal Symposium will be chosen from among those submitted for presentation at the ASA’s Annual Meeting. The selections will be made by the Symposium organizers, Anesthesiology Editor Dr. Judy Kersten, of the Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Dr. David O. Warner, of the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota.

Investigators from around the world with an interest in this subject are encouraged to submit their work to the ASA for the Annual Meeting. Abstracts from both basic and clinical sciences are encouraged. Studies examining or evaluating the effects of the metabolic syndrome and its manifestations (e.g. , obesity, hypertension, and diabetes) on physiology and outcomes in surgical patients and the critically ill, including mechanistic, observational, epidemiologic, and interventional studies, are encouraged. Abstracts should be submitted via  the usual online process (which can be accessed via  the Web sites www.ASAhq.organd www.anesthesiology.org). Interested individuals should be sure to check the Journal Symposium box on the abstract submission form to be considered for inclusion in this special session. The deadline for abstract submission is March 31, 2007.

The authors of abstracts selected for the Symposium will be offered an opportunity to submit their work to Anesthesiology for inclusion in the special Symposium issue to be published in 2008.
