Anesthesiology will sponsor a Major Trials Session at the 2015 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Anesthesiologists. The purpose is to provide a high-profile, large-audience forum for initial presentation of major randomized clinical trial results. The session is designed for substantial trials, usual randomized and blinded, with a clinically important primary outcome. Articles selected for the Trials Session will be featured in ASA press releases.

Presentation at the Major Trials Session is restricted to results that have not been presented anywhere outside the authors’ home institution(s), and priority will be given to results that have not been presented in any public forum. All results presented at the Trials Session will be based on manuscripts that have been accepted for publication in the Journal, with the full papers being simultaneously published.

Full manuscripts for the 2015 Trials Session must be submitted by July 1, 2015, and will undergo an accelerated (but normally stringent) review process. During the Journal submission process, authors will have the opportunity to designate manuscripts for the Trials Session, which will require agreeing not to present the results publicly while the work is under consideration. If a designated manuscript is not deemed acceptable, authors will be notified early enough to allow submission to the Annual Meeting late-breaking abstract session.

In summary, we encourage investigators to take advantage of the Journal’s Major Trials Session, a high-profile forum for presentation of substantial clinical trial results.

“If you want to change the way people work, change the building they work in” is an axiom in architecture. This axiom sets the context for a themed issue addressing changes in health care design and delivery. Health care redesign encompasses everything from optimization of current systems to complete reconceptions, and anesthesiologists can be at the center of these important projects. The themed issue is complementary to the Journal Symposium, which will be held at Anesthesiology^® 2015 in San Diego, California.

To facilitate discussion on this topic, Anesthesiology issues this call for original research papers on a themed issue, “The Anesthesiologist and Health Care Redesign.” This supplement is guest edited by James Rathmell, M.D., and Warren Sandberg, M.D. Submissions of original research are sought on topics such as altering health care delivery systems, perioperative health care delivery, and the value prospect for patients. Submitting a paper does not require attendance at Anesthesiology 2015 in San Diego.

Deadline for submission is August 1, 2015.

The board of directors of the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER) is pleased to announce FAER’s 2015 research grant funding opportunities.

FAER provides research grant funding for anesthesiologists and anesthesiology trainees to gain additional training in basic science, clinical and translational, health services and education research. For early-career anesthesiologists interested in pursuing careers as physician-scientists, FAER grants can be an important starting point. These grants aim to help anesthesiologists develop the skills and preliminary data they need to become independent investigators.

The following research grant funding opportunities are available to anesthesiologists and anesthesiology trainees. The application Web site for the summer/fall 2015 grant funding cycle is open June 1 through August 15, 2015.

Mentored Research Training Grants

Research Areas: Basic Science (MRTG-BS), Clinical and Translational (MRTG-CT), Health Services Research (MRTG-HSR)*

Purpose: To help physician anesthesiologists develop the skills and preliminary data to become independent investigators

For Whom: Faculty members who completed core anesthesiology residency within the past 10 years

Funding: $175,000

Duration: Two years

Percent Research: 75%

Research Fellowship Grant

Research Areas: Basic Science, Clinical and Translational, Health Services or Education

Purpose: To provide significant training in research techniques and scientific methods

For Whom: Anesthesiology trainee after the CA-1 year

Funding: $75,000

Duration: One year

Percent Research: 80%

Research in Education Grant

Research Areas: Education Research

Purpose: To improve the quality and impact of anesthesiology education research

For Whom: Faculty member of any rank (junior or senior faculty)

Funding: $100,000

Duration: Two years

Percent Research: 40%

The FAER Grant Management Committee has made a few changes and clarifications to the eligibility criteria and rules for research grant funding from previous years.

• Applicants may submit only one grant application per award cycle.

• Tuition is not allowed in the budget for any grant.

• The applicant and the primary mentor for the grant must be at the same institution.
