This special article series on the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic provides:

  • An inside look at anesthesia practice from the epicenter of Wuhan, China

  • First-hand accounts on how anesthesiologists were affected – from airway and pulmonary management to practicing in temporary medical units

  • Recommendations from the joint task force of the Chinese Society of Anesthesiology and Chinese Association of Anesthesiologists on the management of patients in the perioperative setting and on emergency airway management outside of the operating room

  • Scholarly review and lessons about the novel 2019 coronavirus and the healthcare response which it has galvanized

  • Perspectives from anesthesiologists, pulmonologists, epidemiologists, and critical care physicians

TRUSTED EVIDENCE ON CORONAVIRUS DISEASE 2019 (COVID-19)

Anesthesiologists may encounter and care for patients with Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) in their roles as experts in emergent airway management, acute and intensive care, and perioperative anesthesia. And the care they provide imposes a significant risk to their own health. Our goal is to bring Trusted Evidence on Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) to our readers, as best we know it now (March 2020). In the interest of expediency, we are sharing these unedited proofs and all journal content related to Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) will be freely available.

As rapidly as the coronavirus is spreading, so too is our ability to understand it, and the pace of discovery is unheralded. It is not without understanding that a journal which publishes monthly cannot keep abreast of these daily events. In addition to the articles in this issue of ANESTHESIOLOGY, more comprehensive and more timely resources are available. These include the World Health Organization (WHO), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, and university and research center websites. The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) has created and is continually updating COVID-19 resources for the anesthesia community, including clinical FAQs and guidance for caring for patients with known or suspected COVID-19 infection.

For patient care the CDC’s Interim Clinical Guidance for Management of Patients with Confirmed Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) and Interim Infection Prevention and Control Recommendations for Patients with Confirmed Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) or Persons Under Investigation for COVID-19 in Healthcare Settings may be particularly helpful.
