Now in its third year, the Nicholas M. Greene Outstanding Humanitarian Award continues to draw nominations for extraordinary anesthesiologists who have made it their life’s work to serve others. This year at the ANESTHESIOLOGY™ 2013 annual meeting in San Francisco, George Gregory, M.D. was honored for his career-long commitment to service for children in low-income settings and education of future volunteers.

This humanitarian award honors life-long volunteer, teacher and humanitarian Dr. Nicholas M. Greene (1922-2004). It was Dr. Greene’s vision, dedication and persistence that created the ASA Overseas Teaching Program (OTP) (1990-2010), and it was his leadership that fostered the “teach the teacher” programs in Africa. The creation of the OTP was not without controversy as, in its initial format, the program was a two-year initiative teaching technicians to deliver a safe anesthetic in their home countries of Tanzania...
