Sixty years ago, representatives from 42 anesthesiology societies gathered in Scheveningen, Netherlands, for the first World Congress of Anaesthesiologists (WCA). Twenty-six societies joined initially, with many others – including ASA – joining at the second World Congress in Toronto in 1960. Today, the WFSA is proud to count more than 120 societies as members, covering some 140 countries across the globe.
Federations rely on their members, and the WFSA is no different. Based on a shared vision of uniting the profession and promoting the safety of, and access to, anesthesia, the WFSA has provided a unique and international forum for the specialty since 1955. ASA is an extremely important contributor, and the WFSA Council currently has Mark J. Lema, M.D., Ph.D., Vinod Malhotra, M.D., Berend Mets, M.B., Ph.D., and Adrian Gelb, M.D., among its members.
