Almost six and a half years ago, Susan and I left Houston to move to Dallas. My reason for the move was to be nearer to my parents, who were having health issues as they progressed in their years. Fortunately, the move was made easier for me when Dr. Charles “Chuck” Whitten offered me an interesting and exciting job in his department of anesthesiology and pain management at UT Southwestern Medical Center. As time progressed, my dad, and then my mom, passed away. My siblings and I felt the tremendous loss of our parents. However, the transition to becoming “orphans” was lessened by prior planning and acceptance of the care decisions our mother and father had made many years before.
