Mobile app usage continues to rise. In the fourth-quarter of 2012, smartphone users spent an average of 23 hours and two minutes per month using phone apps. By the fourth quarter of 2014, use increased 63 percent to 37 hours and 28 minutes. In 2015, more than 1.6 million apps are available for download in the Google Play store and 1.5 million apps in the Apple App Store. Smartphone apps have already had a significant impact in medicine and play roles in medical education, patient care and communication. Mobile app development has the potential to create unique opportunities to improve our field, and we hope that this article will serve as a roadmap for members of the anesthesiology community interested in entering this exciting area of innovation.
