A car crash. A gunshot wound. A workplace injury. Fire. Building collapse. It isn’t something you plan for, and the patients who need this highly specialized care don’t expect their day to include a trip to a trauma center where the most critically injured patients are taken after a severe accident. When patients encounter trauma, physician anesthesiologists step in, expect the unexpected and turn the organized chaos into an opportunity to save lives.

I witnessed this firsthand during our recent When Seconds Count video shoot at the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center. Our goal was to capture on video the skill and dedication of trauma physician anesthesiologists who keep patients alive and control their pain so surgical teams can repair the damage their injuries caused.
