The start of the U.S. Congress’ summer recess offers us an opportunity to review ASA members’ work to date on two priority federal legislative and regulatory issues. Throughout the 2016 congressional year, ASA has been focused on two key initiatives, the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) “Nursing Handbook” and the implementation of the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA). Each of these issues has significant implications for physician anesthesiologists and the patients served by the specialty.

Our most pressing and immediate priority remains the preservation of safe, high-quality anesthesia care in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
