In reading “Navigating Our Future,” Sonya Pease, M.D., and co-authors wrote a timely and informative article (April 2016 ASA Monitor). However, the article presented only one perspective on this important issue. Throughout the piece, positioning with larger, national organizations was cited as the best way to successfully travel through the next maze of CMS payment procedures, i.e., MIPS and APMs. While the article included multiple examples, all favored larger provider organizations.

I submit that the article did not accurately reflect the views of physicians associated with smaller groups. In order to ensure we present diverse perspectives, we should strive to include commentary from small practices in addition to larger groups. By implying one type of practice setting is better-positioned to navigate our marketplace, the authors have ignored the perspectives of many of ASA’s members.
