This message to you was penned on the heels of ANESTHESIOLOGY® 2016. Last year’s ASA annual meeting was as predicted – an invaluable opportunity to come together as a professional community to share ideas, forge connections and leverage resources. But it also was incredibly challenging due to the number of topics crucial to both the immediate and future state of anesthesiology that demand detailed analysis, exposure and strong support. In fact, after listening to the concerns of our members in ASA’s regional caucuses, I scrapped my previously prepared written speech to the House of Delegates (HOD), choosing instead to deliver an extemporaneous message from the heart. My speech focused on our threats and opportunities and what is required of all physician anesthesiologists should we hope to create our best future.
