I grew up in Corpus Christi, Texas. Corpus is a small city on the Gulf of Mexico and it’s known for approximately three things – the birth of Whataburger, the death of Selena Quintanilla, and the sandy, sargasso-laden beaches that edge the barrier islands. That close to the ocean, hurricanes and tropical storms are a part of life. I spent most of them jumping off the local pier to surf the accompanying storm swell; but every once in a while, a larger storm developed, so we loaded up the family photo albums and the cats and headed up to San Antonio, far enough inland to be out of immediate danger.
