The Department of State Affairs serves as a state-level advocacy resource to ASA’s state component societies, providing strategic guidance, message development, and research assistance for their state legislative and regulatory initiatives. The mission of State Affairs is to share information and generate knowledge. So far this year, State Affairs staff has reviewed approximately 2,600 pieces of legislation and 800 proposed regulations to assist state component societies in their important mission to protect patient safety in each state. State Affairs notifies state component society leadership of legislative and regulatory measures that would impact the profession and the patients it serves. Component societies are also notified of amendments, comment due dates, testimony opportunities and the progress or failure of these measures. Throughout the life of the bill or regulation, State Affairs staff offers their availability to assist with – among other things – letters, talking points and comments.
