Professional citizenship and advocacy on behalf of patients’ rights, high-quality health care, truth and transparency, and out of network billing, just to name a few, have allowed physician anesthesiologists many opportunities to advocate on behalf of patients and our medical specialty of anesthesiology. During the VA Nursing Handbook controversy in 2016, there was much discussion in Missouri about how social media could play a greater role in communicating among our state component members, but in also recruitment of new, like-minded advocates.
Physician anesthesiologists in Missouri added an aggressive social media footprint to a long history of engagement and worked creatively to identify new partners. We learned a great deal about social media and advocacy in the process.
