One popular business quote these days holds that the best way to predict the future is to create it. The truth is that in health care, forces from the outside create change that is sometimes beyond the direct control of busy, individual physicians. Professional societies such as ASA and the Society for Education in Anesthesia allow us to come together and influence policy and other changes more than we could as individuals. Another important consideration is the pace of change – our industry is changing at an accelerating rate. At some point, as the pace of change continues to increase, the ability to adapt to change begins to outweigh the ability to accurately predict some far off, static future. The idea here is that even if you can predict the future correctly, the value of that prediction isn’t worth as much, since it won’t be that way for very long....
