As federal pay-for-performance programs such as the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) have played an increasingly important role in provider reimbursement, many physicians who manage acute and chronic pain have struggled to identify quality measures that allow them to participate in the programs in a meaningful way. Of the existing array of available quality measures, many are best suited to reflect primary care or are considered “check the box” measures that impose a data collection burden without providing any useful insight into the quality of care provided.
To address this need, ASA and the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine (ASRA) came together in 2017 to collaboratively develop a set of quality measures related to acute and chronic pain management.
