Though rare, the “never” events that Karen Domino, M.D., M.P.H., encountered as a resident still occur today. Dr. Domino became passionate about patient safety at a time when there were many severe anesthetic complications, including wrong patient surgery, unrecognized esophageal intubation, brain damage due to difficult intubation and cardiac arrest during spinal anesthesia.

Her career-long passion for patient safety and exten-sive experience in outcomes research will inform her John W. Severinghaus Lecture on Translational Science at ANESTHESIOLOGY 2018 this October in San Francisco.

Dr. Domino’s lecture will link past outcomes research with new methods to advance patient safety and quality research, with the goal of translating findings into practice that will shape the future of perioperative care.
