Few feelings rival the satisfaction experienced when one finally achieves a long-sought professional goal. Certainly, successful completion of an anesthesiology residency ranks high on that list. From trainee to staff, to be actively engaged in sustaining and protecting patients throughout their perioperative experience is a noble undertaking. As the field of anesthesiology has matured with its influence expanded beyond the traditional limits of the operative suite, both the challenges and rewards inherent to our profession have similarly grown. Still, there can come a time when the day-to-day practice of anesthesiology may become, well … routine.
