Sixty-four years ago, representatives from 42 anesthesiology societies gathered in Scheveningen, in the Netherlands, for the first World Congress of Anaesthesiologists. The World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA) was incorporated at that time and planned to hold four yearly congresses at venues around the world. Today, the WFSA is proud to count over 134 societies as members, covering some 150 countries across the globe.

The WFSA and its member national societies (which, of course includes, the largest national society, the ASA, as a very important member) are working together with Professor Vladimir Cerny, President of the Scientific Committee (Czech National Society), to organize the 17th World Congress of Anaesthesiologists to be held in Prague, Czech Republic, in September of 2020.
