ASA is divided into the Divisions of Administrative, Scientific and Professional Affairs. This month’s Administrative Update focuses on the economic work produced by the Division of Professional Affairs. It is my privilege to lead the Division in partnership with Chief Advocacy and Practice Officer Manuel Bonilla and Section Chairs Dr. Joseph Szokol and Dr. Neal Cohen.
The Division of Professional Affairs is the bridge between ASA’s substantial scientific, educational and clinical work and the worlds of business, regulation and the law. The Division engages in advocacy on many fronts in order to fulfill ASA’s mission of Advancing the Practice and Securing the Future of anesthesiology. While that advocacy work is often associated with the U.S. Congress and state legislatures, it equally involves significant work with other governmental entities such as the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Veterans Administration, and nongovernmental entities such as the CPT Editorial...
