The anesthesiology community mourns the loss of Harry H. Bird Jr., M.D., who passed away on December 4, 2019, at his home in Hanover, New Hampshire, surrounded by family and friends. He had been battling glioblastoma for seven months. Among accomplishments too numerous to mention here, Harry served as ASA President in 1988, received the ASA Distinguished Service Award in 1998 and was President of the American Board of Anesthesiology in 1982-83. He will be remembered by the broader community for his tireless public service, his encyclopedic knowledge of all areas he pursued and his unwavering ethics as a leader. To his patients and the many who considered him a friend or mentor, he will be remembered for his uncommon capacity for empathy and caring.
