In conjunction with Pain Awareness Month in September, ASA commissioned a nationwide survey that found escalating interest in using marijuana and cannabinoids to address pain, despite the need for more research on their safety and effectiveness. A news release on the survey, which quoted ASA Immediate Past President Linda J. Mason, M.D., FASA, discussing pain management alternatives, was featured on HealthDay, United Press International, U.S. News & World Report, National Public Radio (San Francisco), and other outlets. Additionally, a mat release (a feature article that appears in newspapers or online to complement staff-written material) on the topic was featured online by more than 1,071 news outlets, including the Houston Chronicle, San Antonio Express-News and San Francisco Chronicle, reaching nearly 120 million people.
