While it seems like we have only started to “settle in” to 2020, it is already time to start looking ahead to 2021. In this month’s column, I will describe some of the issues that we might expect to see in the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) proposed rule for 2021 and/or other venues.

Many procedures/services carry an assigned global period meaning that the payment includes all the work and resources necessary to perform the procedure on the day of service and all related care for a time period after that day. Global periods range from 0 to 90 days. The concept is not applicable to some services such as anesthesia or Evaluation and Management (E/M).
