Technically speaking, ASA is what is known in the association world as an “individual membership organization,” which is ironic because I’ve never seen a community come together as we have over these last few, trying months. In countless ways, you have stepped into the breach to save lives threatened by COVID-19. The world is noticing. An example is this headline from an ABC News story, which reads, “Anesthesiologists hailed as special heroes in fight against coronavirus.”

As you have risen to the challenges posed by COVID-19, so too has ASA. Your individual stories of courage provide the foundation for ASA’s strength and effectiveness. I have never experienced a time when the power of a unified specialty has been so evident, and the need for every anesthesiologist to be an ASA member clearer. We can accomplish so much more together...
