Launched at the World Congress of Anaesthesiologists in Hong Kong in 2016, the WFSA Fresenius Kabi Anaesthesia Innovation Awards Program has supported the development of three innovative devices, championed by their designers:

The SmartBlade, a video laryngoscope comprising a disposable blade with a smart phone attached; envisioned by Dr Caroline Corbett.

The Revocap: “A Revolution in Global Capnography,” a portable end-tidal CO2 monitor that meets ISO standards and is priced under $300; produced by medical student Maziar Mohsen Nourian, and Dr. Michael Lipnick.

The Screenless Anaesthesia Monitor (SAM), a paperback-sized, battery-powered device that transmits three vital signs – blood pressure, oximetry, EKG – wirelessly to a personal smartphone; conceived by Dr. Paul Barton.

Fresenius Kabi's Chief Medical Officer, fellow anesthesiologist Dr. Martin Westfall, backed the $25,000 grant support for each innovation, while the WFSA Scientific Committee coordinated the three yearly application and adjudication processes, and provided logistic...
