In October 1986, Dr. Myron Yaster gathered a group of pediatric anesthesiologists and proposed the formation of a new society that would be dedicated to advancing the care of children in the perioperative setting. They dreamt of an inclusive group that would promote research, education, and safety initiatives that bettered the care of pediatric patients of all ages at a time when they are particularly vulnerable. From these ideas, the Society of Pediatric Anesthesia (SPA) was born. Little could they know the future success and impact that SPA would have. From leading efforts to standardize pediatric anesthesiology fellowship, to supporting and funding research and education in the field, SPA has been at the forefront of pediatric anesthesiology. Now, 35 years later, we are celebrating their vision and looking to the future as we continue to build on our mission.
