The anesthesiology department at Duke University Medical Center has garnered some impressive national honors. Recent rankings by U.S. News & World Report and Doximity list the university's anesthesiology program fourth and fifth, respectively, in the country. And at last count, Duke Anesthesiology came in fifth nationwide in funding from the National Institutes of Health.

Duke Anesthesiology chairman and professor Joseph P. Mathew, MD, MHSc, MBA, credits the department's mission – providing extraordinary care through a unique culture of education, innovation, research, and professional growth – for guiding the team on a path of success. The force propelling the department forward, he said, is its members.
