I first met Jerome Adams, MD, MPH, in 2004 when we were both resident physicians participating in ASA Resident Component activities. Fast forward nearly 13 years to September 5, 2017, when Dr. Adams was appointed the 20th U.S. Surgeon General. I was thrilled that Dr. Adams would be the first anesthesiologist to serve as U.S. Surgeon General. No one could have predicted the challenges he would face in his role as the Nation's Doctor. I proudly watched Dr. Adams navigate complex challenges during a global pandemic coupled with one of the most divisive political landscapes. At the conclusion of his term, I wondered what it was like for Dr. Adams to advocate during an unprecedented time and specifically as a physician trained in anesthesiology.
