One of our specialty's most prolific and celebrated researchers is leaving the journal after serving nine years as editor. Dr. Sessler's tenure on the journal's editorial board coincided with the publication seeing its highest-ever impact factor of 7.067 in 2020 (see his thoughts on the impact factor as a metric of value below). Dr. Sessler is the founder and director of the Cleveland Clinic's Outcomes Research Consortium – the largest clinical anesthesiology research group in the world. With more than 40,000 documented citations, he is regarded as the most published and most cited anesthesiologist on earth. The journal has been immensely grateful for Dr. Sessler's contributions as editor for the last nine years, but we – along with the rest of the wider anesthesiology community – look forward to his next steps and continued collaboration with him through other channels.
