ASA Past President Frank Moya, MD, passed away on August 30, 2021 at the age of 92. Dr. Moya's accomplishments over his 60-plus year career as a clinician, researcher, mentor, businessman, and leader were groundbreaking and still resonate today. As President in 1975, Dr. Moya guided the society and the specialty at a time when malpractice insurance premiums crippled many anesthesiologists and presented an existential threat to the specialty. His dedication to the issue culminated in his founding of the Anesthesiologists Professional Assurance Company in 1984, the first self-insured malpractice insurance company for anesthesiologists. A mentee of Drs. Virginia Apgar and John Bonica, Dr. Moya established himself as a guiding force in academic anesthesiology, and he was world-renowned for his research in obstetric anesthesia, the placental barrier, and newborn physiology.
