This edition of the ASA Monitor highlights the critical role advocacy plays in protecting our patients and defending the future of anesthesiology.

Every day, lawmakers across the country make health policy decisions that directly impact patients and anesthesiologists alike, proving that the promotion of safe, high-quality anesthesia care is not limited to our clinical work alone – advocacy is needed to protect our patients and advance our profession. We must be aware of these policy developments, but also take steps to positively influence the decisions being made in Washington and in states across the country.

Every profession advocates for its members, and if physician anesthesiologists do not take the initiative, the results would be disastrous for our profession and, above all, our patients. It is critical that we rise to face the challenges ahead and build on the great gains our advocacy work has yielded so far.
