For most of us at the state level, our experience with advocating for our patients and our profession begins within the walls of the legislature. Whether it is during medical school or our early years in practice, we will answer the call of the state society and participate in an annual day at the capital where our colleagues will receive their talking points, put on the lab coat, speak with their lawmaker(s) whom they may or may not know, and participate in a group photo at the end of the event. That is how many of us started. From that early experience, we are just beginning to understand the multifaceted approach to advocacy our state leaders and staff have operationalized to promote and preserve patient safety.
