Anesthesiologists are keenly aware of the importance of advocacy. For most anesthesiologists, this takes the form of communicating with statewide office holders and members of the United States Senate and House of Representatives. Whether providing arguments for patient safety, improved payments that better reflect the service, or protecting physician-led care, these efforts are absolutely essential. Physicians should not forget that the effectiveness of their efforts will depend directly on their sphere of influence. Consequently, they should strive to strengthen and expand that sphere. There is no better way to do that than on the state level. Small, consistent efforts over time will lead to exponential results in advocacy. The following recommendations provide insights that are intended to motivate and inspire physicians to become more involved in advocacy efforts for their profession.
