As anesthesiologists, we are all leaders in at least one major aspect of our professional lives – providing anesthesia as part of a perioperative team in the OR. Leadership plays an essential role in exceptional anesthesia care. Leadership skills are also vital to other aspects of our professional lives, including managing ORs and advocating for our profession and patients. Good leadership requires good communication skills.
Women communicate differently than men. There are notable differences in what women and men choose to say, in their words and style of speech, and in their nonverbal communication. They also perceive communication from others differently. Even the purpose of communication may differ among genders (asamonitor.pub/3FLIOZl). These distinct modes of communication may contribute to differences in leadership style and our perceptions of “good” and “bad” leaders.
