Figure 1. Rats had 1.2 ml/kg (2.4 ml/kg for the high-volume acid group) of the indicated injury vehicle instilled into their lungs via a tracheal catheter. At the indicated time, the animal was harvested and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) was performed with 2 x 7 ml phosphate-buffered saline. The clarified, recovered BAL fluid was assayed for TNF-[Greek small letter alpha] activity by a cytotoxicity bioassay.
